Abstract: The article presents the main trends of developing the meanings of the word god; Iran, Ukrainian and Sanskrit borrowings: god as a giver of good and riches; god as fright, surprise, fear, connected with relevant noise and sounds; god as a thunderstorm, a thunder; god as a devil, a ghost. It’s necessary to replace the word god with a neutral, appropriate word with a positive meaning.
