Abstract: The origins and classification features of the assessment of the epochs of human evolution are revealed: the system of objective laws of the development of nature and society, the mechanism of their manifestation in the practical activity of man, the social and personal contradictions of man himself, the social consequences of labour, as a result of the transformation of productive forces and production relations in society, etc. The significance and the determining role of the criterion of the class nature of society in assessing the essence and classification of historical epochs are identified.
