Abstract: The article examines the potential of the ethnoeydem approach for analyzing hidden ethnocultural layers in Old Russian texts, primarily in The Tale of Igor’s Campaign. The author substantiates the need to employ the term ethnoeydem as a more precise tool for identifying culturally marked elements compared to traditional notions used in lacunology. Using the expression “the creaking of carts” as an example, the study demonstrates the transformation of its semantics from a negative association – linked to Turkic invasions – to a positively connoted image in the Tale. The analysis shows that the ethnoeydem method can refine cultural context, reveal intercultural influences, and contribute to new interpretations of the text’s authorship.

Key words: ethnoeydem analysis, Turkic mental values, semantic transformation, cultural identity of the author, hidden cultural layers, Old Russian chronicle.
