Abstract: The article is devoted to the evolution of French literature from its origins in the Middle Ages to the present day. The work examines the key stages of development, including the Renaissance, classicism, romanticism, realism, symbolism and modernism. Particular attention is paid to the influence of historical and social processes on literary movements and works of great authors such as Victor Hugo, Guy de Maupassant, Marcel Proust and others. The article is aimed at studying the relationship between literature and philosophy, as well as its impact on world culture. The work is an overview of the main achievements of the French literary tradition and its role in the formation of European culture.
