Abstract: The article analyzes the population movement of Russian regions in the period from 1990 to 2023, including intraregional and external migration flows. The authors focus on the scale, directions and effectiveness of migration exchange with Russian regions and foreign countries, study age characteristics and factors of migration, assess its consequences for the socio-demographic potential of Russian regions as donors. Mechanisms for curbing migration outside the regions are considered, including the provision of preferential mortgages and other social payments to the population. The importance of their spatial characteristics at the level of the post-Soviet space of Russia and its regions is studied and demonstrated. The combination of the widely used "language of numbers" in the text - an abundance of statistical material - with an emotionally charged assessment of the demographic and ethnic processes under study enlivens the work and cannot leave the reader indifferent. The article poses important scientific questions to the reader, but, unfortunately, provides fewer answers.

Key words: migration; migration exchange; efficiency, direction of migration; push and pull factors, depopulation, ethnic aspects, regional migration.
