Abstract: The three ghazals of Alisher Navoi that are featured in the reading portion of Armin Vambery’s work “Cagataische Sprachstudien”, which was crucial to the development of Western Oriental studies, are examined in this article along with their translations. The approach used by Vambery to produce the ghazals in Chaghatai, their translation into German, poetic expression, and substantive discrepancies are all scientifically examined. The primary focus is on the translations’ semantic changes, whether the poetic framework is preserved or destroyed, and how the German reader perceives Navoi’s writings. Simultaneously, several versions of Navoi’s divans are compared with the texts in Vambery’s reading section, editorial variations are noted, and conclusive proof regarding the author’s editing is presented.

Key words: Navoi, Vambery, translation problems, ghazals, chrestomathy, oriental, textual and German studies.
