Abstract: The article examines the transformation of the image of women in the history of French literature from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Key female characters, their symbolism, role in the literary context and reflection of social changes are analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the works of Francois Villon, Madame de Lafayette, Hugo, Balzac, Zola, Colette, Sagan and Duras. Stable archetypes (muse, witch, mother, lover) and the processes of their destruction or rethinking are identified. The author focuses on the interaction of the literary image and the socio-cultural realities of her time. The article will be useful for researchers, teachers and students interested in literary hermeneutics and gender studies.
