Abstract: Early blight, caused by the fungal pathogen Alternaria solani, is one of the most destructive foliar diseases affecting potato crops worldwide. It leads to significant yield and quality losses, particularly under favorable environmental conditions such as high humidity and warm temperatures. The disease primarily affects the leaves, stems, and occasionally the tubers, resulting in premature defoliation, reduced photosynthetic activity, and diminished tuber formation. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology, symptomatology, and lifecycle of A. solani, highlighting the critical environmental and agronomic factors that facilitate its development and spread. Drawing upon recent international research, including studies by Leiminger et al. (2014), Chaerani & Voorrips (2006), and others, the study explores both conventional and innovative strategies for managing the disease. These include cultural practices, biological control using antagonistic microorganisms, fungicide applications, and the use of resistant potato varieties. The integration of these methods into a sustainable and holistic framework, known as Integrated Disease Management (IDM), offers the most promising approach for reducing disease incidence while minimizing environmental and economic costs. The findings underscore the urgent need for continued research, particularly in breeding for resistance and improving biocontrol efficiency, to support global potato production and food security.
