Abstract: In the article, the authors consider various aspects of the relationship between Russians and Tatars both in the 19th-20th centuries and in earlier times, both rural and urban populations. The historical experience of living together and enriching cultures during close and long-term contacts are illustrated by examples of mutual borrowings in material culture (tools, housing, food), mutual linguistic influence. The authors pay attention to the reflection in folklore of stereotypical ideas of Russians and Tatars about each other, showing the origins of negative and positive stereotypes. In the article, the authors also examine the integration experience of Russia in relation to the Crimean Tatars. In 2014, the Crimean Tatar issue received a new impetus to internationalization, which was associated with a number of factors. The foreign information space was filled with news reports, reports of international organizations on human rights violations in Crimea and the oppression of the Crimean Tatars. At the same time, in historical retrospect, Crimea is integrated into the Russian space not for the first time.
