Abstract: In the article, the authors examine various aspects of the relationship between Russians and Tatars both in the 19th-20th centuries and in earlier times, both rural and urban populations. The historical experience of living together and enriching cultures during close and long-term contacts are illustrated by examples of mutual borrowings in material culture (tools, housing, food), and mutual linguistic influence. The authors pay attention to the reflection in folklore of stereotypical ideas of Russians and Tatars about each other, showing the origins of negative and positive stereotypes. The mass transition of the Crimean Tatars to the side of Nazi Germany during the Great Patriotic War led to the deportation of the Tatar population in May-June 1944 to the territory of the Uzbek, Kazakh and Kirghiz SSR.
