Abstract: This scientific article examines gender aspects in the history of Kazakh society, the peculiarities of the status of men and women in traditional nomadic culture, and the transformation of gender roles during the period of the Russian Empire, Soviet modernization, and the era of independent Kazakhstan. The study analyzes the social, economic, political, and cultural factors that determined the status of women and men in Kazakh society. Particular attention is paid to the influence of Islam, traditional customary law (adat), Soviet policies of women’s emancipation, and contemporary processes of gender transformation. The research demonstrates that gender relations in Kazakh society were shaped both by traditional nomadic institutions and by external political and cultural changes.

Key words: gender, Kazakh society, woman, traditions, adat, Islam, Soviet modernization, emancipation, patriarchy, Kazakhstan.
